AUGUSTA: "The Department of Human Services is proud to announce that we have submitted to the state Legislature a statewide, smoke-free restaurant bill with broad, bi-partisan support," announced DHS Commissioner Kevin W. Concannon today. "Our goal with the bill is to protect workers in Maine restaurants as well as Maine children and adults rom the toxic hazards of secondhand smoke."
"Secondhand smoke kills, on average, one Maine person per day," explained Bureau of Health Director Dora Mills, MD. "A major exposure in the workplace to this toxic chemical continues to be restaurants, and we know that as a result of exposure, restaurant workers are much more likely to suffer from lung cancer, heart disease, and respiratory diseases."
"Restaurants are a common public place where children are exposed as well. Their developing lungs are much more susceptible to the toxic effects of secondhand smoke, and exposure to it causes sudden infant death syndrome, low birth weight, childhood asthma, pneumonia and ear infections," added Dr. Mills. "For this reason, our bill focuses on ensuring a smoke-free environment in restaurants that allow children."
"Since Portlands restaurants have become smoke-free and a number of other communities are considering it, the timing of a statewide initiative seems right," commented Commissioner Concannon. "We are proud to have bi-partisan and independent support for the bill from legislators from every corner of the state."
The bill is sponsored by Rep. David Etnier (D, Harpswell)
Chief co-sponsor is Senate Majority Leader Chellie Pingree (D, Knox)
Co-Sponsors include:
Senate President Mark Lawrence, (D, York)
Senate Minority Leader Jane Amero, (R, Cumberland)
Senator Jill Goldthwait, (I, Hancock)
Senator S. Peter Mills, (R, Somerset)
Speaker of the House Stephen Rowe, (D, Portland)
Health and Human Services Committee House Chair Tom Kane, (D, Saco)
Representative Irvin Belanger, (R, Caribou)
Representative Joe Bruno, (R, Raymond)
In addition to the legislative sponsors of the bill, the Maine Coalition for Smoking or Health, led by Dr. Stephen Sears of Augusta, has made a smoke-free restaurant bill a priority for this legislative session.

My comments to the Human Services:
I was just sent this URL about the Human Services Announcement and their Smoke Free Restaurant Bill. All the restaurants in Maine HAVE been smoke free for several years now.
Don't you believe that it should be up to the owner to make his business smoke free or not? Why did Human Services have to stick their nose into this!
We are not all sheeple out here, Dora. This is just another reason for the Health Department to continue receiving funding from the Tobacco Settlement to which WE SMOKERS ARE PAYING FOR 100% PERCENT!
"Secondhand smoke kills, on average, one Maine person per day," explained Bureau of Health Director Dora Mills, MD. " (Show me the study and I will show you the truth).
The Federal Court threw out the EPA's 1993 ETS study in 1998 the link made by the EPA Report in 1993 between secondary smoke and cancer was thrown out in a federal court because the statistics were bent to support a predetermined conclusion and normal scientific guidelines were ignored.
I think anyone who tries to dismiss the findings of the U.S. Department of Energy labs at Oak Ridge, should be confronted with the question: "Are you saying that DOE researchers committed scientific fraud and that their findings on ETS exposure are untrue?" I'd like to see what the Human Services would say in response to that question.
ORNL Study On ETS
Also, I am putting this on my Internet Site at Free Republic to let the people in Maine know just where you stand on this. The people in Maine are NOT happy with the government control. We are fed up. We are also fed up with the blatant disregard of how you are spending the MSA money!

Did you see the RINO'S???? The RINO'S are endorsing CONTROL of businesses! I am not real happy with the way Human Services are spending the cigarette tax money!
Restaurants in Maine have been smoke free for several years, but I do not want Human Services to start telling bars/restaurants that THEY have to go smoke free as well. This control and miss-use of the Tobacco Settlement money has got to stop!

Do these doctors just need an issue, too? There are many Americans being treated for maladies such as diebetes who don't adhere to their diet regime or whatever but are treated a heck of a lot better than smokers. People with allergies to specific foods try to get the entire school system and other public places to ban their foods, ei, peanuts and/or peanut butter. The world has gone nuts trying to equalize the minority and even go far as giving the minority everything they want. I don't need the government and these not-so-do-gooders to save me from myself when they have so many bad attributes themselves. Remember the fitness expert who was a fanatic about smoking that died at a relatively young age jogging? I bet when he got to the pearly gates he thought of the many fun things he could have done with his life other than carping at others' for what he perceived as negatives. He got negated anyway!

RINO's?
Mills the Senator and Mills the M.D. (brother and sister) are at least socialists,She is a green party communist. The Senator is a disgrace and should be asked to leave the party. There isn't a spending bill he hasn't supported.
I'm disappointed in Amero and Joe Bruno.
I'll yell at Joe Bruno next time I see him, especially with his conflict with state contracts (Gould health).

It gets worse.
More conflicts of interest.
Dr Sears with his Maine Coalition for Smoking or health wants to get $750,000.00 for "administrative services".
I guess he wants to supplement his salary a little bit......

I'll yell at Joe Bruno next time I see him, especially with his conflict with state contracts (Gould health). I sent email to Joe And Irvin. I even told Irvin (who is in my district) that I was very disappointed in him, and the only reason he will get my vote is because I do not want the Demorcrats to get his seat. Both Joe and Irvin will know that I am VERY upset with this!

This sort of thing is wrong.
No one can argue that smoking is healthy for you, but passing laws that limit the freedoms of individuals and constrain the businesses from offering legal services is puritanism and oppression.

You should have threatened to not vote for him, even if you intend to. What reason does he have to take your position into consideration if he knows he has your vote anyway? I'm sure you hate to lie, but since you're dealing with politicans..."when in Rome" comes to mind.

Rick, your sure right! They banned smoking in Maine Restaurants back in 1998! They just went in and shut the smoking sections down. Can you imagine down around Old Orchard Beach and the Maine coastline where the tourist go? NO SMOKING. I am amazed that tourism hasn't dropped off. If truth be known, it probably did.
We are in northern Maine, and there are only three places that we go to eat because they have a liquor license and kids under 18 are not allowed. Who needs kids anyway. LOL!
But the Human Service better not try to take away our right to smoke in THOSE three places. They will sure hear it from me!

This is the email I sent ole Irvin this morning:
Dear Irvin,
I was just sent this URL about the Human Services Announcement and their Smoke Free Restaurant Bill:
Irvin, all the restaurants in Maine HAVE been smoke free for several years now. What floors me is that YOU are a co-sponsor! I don't care what you think about smoking personally, but this bill is WRONG!

I am appalled, Irvin, that you are apart of this. A Conservative at that. The only reason you will EVER get my vote is because I do not want the Democrats to get another seat.
Also, I am putting this on my Internet Site at Free Republic to let the people in Maine know just where you stand on this. The people in Maine are NOT happy with the government control. We are fed up.
You really disappoint me.
I sent the same email to Joe Bruno as well, although I can't give him my vote. At least he will know that I am pissed off about this!

I know, SheLion. But he has to believe he runs the risk of losing votes or he has no incentive to change his position. By telling him you will still support him with your vote you have made your objection to his policy meaningless, at least make him think he is going to lose votes.

"Secondhand smoke kills, on average, one Maine person per day," explained Bureau of Health Director Dora Mills, MD.How many people are there in Maine?
When can we expect to be able to move to this uninhabited state and make it a conservative haven?
"A major exposure in the workplace to this toxic chemical continues to be restaurants, and we know that as a result of exposure, restaurant workers are much more likely to suffer from lung cancer, heart disease, and respiratory diseases."
How they get away with lies of this magnitude is beyond me. It really is.
There must be so many sheeple out there that we could make yarn and knit a sweater for the worlds population.

By telling him you will still support him with your vote you have made your objection to his policy meaningless, at least make him think he is going to lose votes. Ok, you win. heh! I just sent him another email. Let me know what you think:
Dear Irvin,
I have been giving this a lot of thought about your involvement about Smoke Free Everything in the state of Maine. I do not think you are the one I want in the State House. You will be voting for bans at every turn.
Considering the information available about tobacco smoke not being a health hazard that Human Services is spewing, we will not be voting for you, and I will spread the news to my family and friends as well.
Until you change your stance on this issue, we will not be voting for you. I hate to think the a Democrat will be sitting in your seat if you lose, it still might be a better alternative then having a RINO in there.
Sincerely,
Darlene Brennan
